Manila, Philippines – Filipino honeymooners in Maldives have reportedly drowned in Dhiffushi island of Kaafu atoll.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) reported that the 29-year-old woman and her 30-year-old husband were guests in a resort on Dhiffushi Island and were snorkeling when they drowned on Sunday.

The couple was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Dhiffushi hospital, say the local police.

According to a report by RaajjeMV news site, a source from the island said that the man begun drowning first, the woman then called for help upon seeing her husband. However, both were already motionless and afloat on the water when someone approached them.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed its sympathies to the couple’s family as the agency gave assurances of assistance in the repatriation of the remains and instructed the Philippine Embassy in Dhaka to coordinate with the locals in making arrangements.

Reports also said that the couple was high school sweethearts named Leomer and Erika Joyce Lagradilla, who tied the knot on December 18, 2018. They left for Maldives on January 9 for their dream destination and honeymoon.
