DOLE says SM regularizes 11,660 workers in 2018

Manila, Philippines – Following the footsteps of Jollibee which regularized some 1,000 workers this year is SM Supermalls.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III has announced on Monday that SM Supermalls owner and business tycoon Henry Sy has regularized 11,660 workers this year in line with the government’s commitment to secure tenure for the people.

In a media briefing, Bello said the regularized workers of SM used to be contractual employees under manpower agencies.

"We are expecting more workers regularized when the last quarter report comes in," the Labor chief said

Bello detailed that in Metro Manila, SM regularized around 4,800 workers, and then 2865 for Calabarzon, Mimaropa with 1,476 and the rest came from other regions.

The workers were reportedly regularized from January to September 2018.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) had intensified its inspections this year for strict compliance of the companies to labor law.

As for Jollibee, aside from 1,000 workers regularized this year, the fastfood-giant also committed to regularize more next year as they are expected to do so.

According to DOLE, a total of 411,449 workers have been regularized this year.
